Break-out sessions

After the plenary sessions, a series of break-out sessions will be accommodated. These will be organised by survey teams and focus groups. Below you can find a description of the planned activities during the various break-out sessions and tutorials. A schedule for these sessions can be found under the Programme tab.

SKA HI Science Working Group meeting
Organisers: Betsey Adams and Barbara Catinella

The SKA HI Science Working Group (SWG) connects the HI scientific community to the SKA office. In this session, the co-chairs (Betsey Adams and Barbara Catinella) will provide a brief overview of the SWG and current planned activities. We will then have a structured discussion on what the SWG can do in the future. This breakout session will be open to all attendees of PHISCC, in addition to all members of the HI SWG through a hybrid format.

MARTINI - Mock observations of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations
Organiser: Kyle Oman

MARTINI is a modular package for the creation of synthetic resolved HI line observations (data cubes) of smoothed-particle hydrodynamics simulations of galaxies, including EAGLE, IllustrisTNG, Simba, Magneticum, NIHAO, and others. The various aspects of the mock-observing process are divided logically into sub-modules handling the data cube, source, beam, noise, spectral model and SPH kernel. In this tutorial, I'll walk through an example starting with tables of particle properties from a simulation and ending with a mock 21-cm data cube. The example will be hosted on a google colab instance - no preparation or software installation necessary. Some time will also be allowed for further exploration with the worked example, support installing the code, or to experiment on full simulation datasets. Those wishing to try MARTINI on a particular simulation may want to bring along the data, or have ready access to where it is hosted.

CARTA tutorial
Organisers: Alex Sivitilli and Kuo-Song Wang

TBD

Mightee-HI survey team break-out session
Organiser: Natasha Maddox

We will provide an update on the current state of all MIGHTEE data collection and processing, including continuum, spectral line, and ancillary data. The plan for the next round of data, and projects possible, will be discussed. Ideas for additional observations are welcome, especially in light of the upcoming ALMA deadline. The session is open to all, and a zoom link will be provided for remote attendance.

SoFiA tutorial and Q&A
Organisers: Thijs van der Hulst and Tobias Westmeijer

The SoFiA tutorial/Q&A will familiarize the attendants with SoFiA, help them install it on their laptops if they have not done this before coming (the preferred mode) and guide them through the various options in SoFiA. In case all attendants are already familiar with SoFiA the emphasis will be on more advanced use of the various SoFiA features.

Workshop participants are strongly encouraged to bring their own data and to install SoFiA on their laptops before the meeting. We will be glad to help them in case they have problems.

MHONGOOSE survey team break-out session
Organiser: Erwin de Blok

In the MHONGOOSE break-out session we will present a more extended and technical update on the current state of the MHONGOOSE observations and data reduction. This will be followed by a number of informal presentations by team members on their latest results and work in progress. The second half of the break-out session will consist of a discussion on any of the results presented, as well as future plans or projects.
The session is open to all PHISCC participants.

LADUMA survey team break-out session
Organiser: Sarah Blyth

TBD
