ADS settings to read journals from any computer (if you have a RUG P-number)

Here are the settings for ADS, to get access to the journals via the RUG subscriptions.

You have to have (or make) an account in ADS. Once you login to the account, go to my Account (upper-right corner of the page), and there to the link Library Links Settings (Library Links Help).

There fill in the two boxes with the following information (the underlined text on the left is what appears on that ADS webpage. The the boldface text (with the http addresses) on the right is what you have to put into the boxes):

Specify Library Link server:http://worldcatlibraries.org/registry/gateway

Library Link icon:http://sfx.ub.rug.nl:9003/sfx_local/sfx.gif

Here are two useful bookmarklets(*).

(For these bookmarklets to work, you need to have Java enabled as a plugin of your browser.)

The first one (written by me) automatically sets proxy settings such that employees and students of the University of Groningen can read  journals to which the University is subscribed from any internet connection. The user must have a personnel or student number and a valid password from the University to use this service.

Journals via UB-RUG proxy : Read subscribed journals via the UB-RUG proxy.

How to get it: To be able to use it, you must first save it as a bookmark in your browser. For this, right click with your mouse on the link above, and save it as a bookmark or favorite. (I like to put it on the browser’s toolbar.)

How to use it: Suppose you are at home, or abroad, and you want to read an article from a journal for which the University has a subscription. Simply go to the website of the journal, and once there click on the bookmarklet. You’ll be redirected to the server of the University of Groningen where you must give your p/s number and password (see bookmarklet below if you have problems making your browser remember your username and password). After that you’ll be redirected to the journal web site with normal access to all articles.

The second one is from http://www.bookmarklets.com, and makes a web browser remember a username and password entered at a web site even if the site changes the set up so that this would not be possible.

remember password:  Makes the browser ignore web site requests to not remember passwords.

How to get it: (Same as above) To be able to use it, you must first save it as a bookmark in your browser. For this, right click with your mouse on the link above, and save it as a bookmark or favorite. (I like to put it on the browser’s toolbar.)

How to use it: Enter username and password on the web page as normal, and before hitting or clicking “Enter”, click first on this bookmarklet, and the browser will offer you to remember the username and password.

(*)A bookmarklet is a small computer application stored as the URL of a bookmark in a web browser that, instead of opening a web page (as normal bookmarks), performs some specific action when clicked.

javascript:( function() { var loc = top.location.href; var final = "https://login.proxy-ub.rug.nl/login?url=" + loc; window.location.href=final } ) ();
