Oort Archives
The Oort Archives are part of the Leiden Observatory Archives and reside at
the Leiden University Library, department Special Collections.
The files below follow the inventory of the
Oort Archives by Jet Katgert-Merkelijn, see her book
The
Letters and Papers of Jan Hendrik Oort
(cover illustrated above). The listings and headings below have been copied
directly from her book with a few very minor changes.
The pdf files below have been produced from photographs that I took with an
iPad during about 75 days of examination of the Archives. I first reduced
these 2 by 2 pixels to make the size manageable, which was then
followed by collection in pdf-format per archive item. The original images
are kept by me at my personal account in Groningen.
The coverage is far from complete and the
selections are mine on the basis of what I felt useful to include for my own
use. Especially the enormous amount of research notes has not been recorded;
only pages that contained something particularly important were included. From
those files I did record all letters and often drafts of papers. I included
the full lecture notes of the two courses that I followed.
There were two sets of letters. From the general correspondence letters were
only included when I felt they were useful for my purpose. The correspondence
with individuals that are collected in separate archive
items, has usually been included completely.
For the administrative files I have included most of the correspondence, but
other documents only when relevant for me in writing the biography.
The quality is variable. I have removed the worst
pictures from the collection, but some are poor but still (sometimes barely)
good enough to use.
Some parts of the archive are confidential and not open
to the public and access requires written permission
from the Librarian of Leiden University. This applies to the correspondence
between Oort and Th. Walraven (item 198)
and Oort's private archives (items
342 through 362).
The links are included in the Webpage below, but there are
no files associated with it.
The number of pages between brackets are those in the pdf-files. This may be
used as an indication of the level of coverage by comparing to the descriptions
in Jet Katgert-Merkelijn's book.
The total number of pages on this Webpage is
27,340,
of which 3,354 are in the private Oort archives
section and 841 in the Walraven correspondence.
I hope that in
spite of all the shortcomings this collection is of some use for the time being,
until the Oort Archives are
available directly from the Universiy Library Leiden in electronic form
on the Web.
The files are reproduced here with permission of Leiden University Library.
I am grateful to the staff of the department Special Collections for
their excellent support, help and assistance during my many visits.
Note: Arnold Schalks, visual writer and artist from Rotterdam, has provide transcrips of a large fraction of the correspondence contained in the files under the heading 3.7. Kenya Expedition (228-231). These are all in Dutch. It can be downloaded by following this link.
