At the Kapteyn Lab. we have a scanner connected to the PC EISINGA
(room 180). Here we describe how to get started:
Start the scanner (power button on the right side of the scanner) and the PC.
Before scanning, please check whether you have a user directory
on drive E:. If not, create a directory with your user name. The simplest
way is starting MSDOS by double clicking the MSDOS icon. Then:
E:>cd users E:>md comelloNow double click the deskscan icon to start the DeskScan II software. In the help of the deskscan program, there is a 'getting started' item. It contains all necessary information to help first time users. Position your paper and press preview. If you made all the necessary adjustments press final. Choose the correct directory and enter a filename. Copy the image to a floppy or use the Cute-FTP program. Usually a file is stored in TIF format. The Unix program xview displays the image and can save it in another graphics format. Of course the image can be stored as an Encapsulated PostScript file, but some printers will not print the file because it lacks a showpage command. This command can be added in an editor. It must be inserted near the end of the file between the image data and
end restore %%TrailerThe TIF files are usually (very) big. Please remove the scan files after you have copied them. Note that the E:\ disk is a temporary disk. Once in a while all data on that disk is removed.
