Integral Field Spectroscopy

In recent years it has become possible to take an optical/near IR spectrum of a 2-dimensional part of the sky, as opposed to a linear region using a long-slit spectrograph. This technique, Integral Field Spectroscopy, offers a number of advantages, and is clearly a technique of the future. A nice description of the technique can be found on Jeremy Allington-Smith's homepage.  To resume, the next figure schematically shows how several implementations of Integral Field Spectroscopy work.
