Pool prizes to be awarded on Friday July 26
Almost one month after the World Cup finished, the prizes for the numbers 1, 2 and 3 of the Kapteyn World Cup Pool will be awarded. This will take place on Friday, the 26th of July at 16:00 hours in the coffee corner. It is not clear yet exactly how much of the money is actually left by now, since rumours are heard that (part of) it might have been spent by the HOC members on booze. All participants and other interested are invited to attend this event!
Cesar wins Kapteyn World Cup Pool 2002!
As already expected, Cesar has won the Kapteyn World Cup Pool! Congratulations Cesar and may you spend the money wisely (i.e. buy the HOC some beers :-)! Cesar kept his 3 point lead also during the last days of the World Cup. Willem stayed in second place and Eline completes the top three. For the complete results, check the participants page.
Final scores pool delayed
Now that the World Cup is over, the final scores of the participants in the Kapteyn World Cup Pool can in principle be calculated. Although rumours are that Cesar will have kept his lead and be the winner of the Pool, we would like to see the official final ranking. The HOC member in charge of calculating the scores, Emilio, has, however, been too lazy to calculate the scores. Maybe some action of the other HOC members is needed to get this over with and to get the final ranking published?
Brazil world champions 2002
In Yokohama Brazil have become world champions for the fifth time in history by beating Germany 2-0 in the final. Big man in the match was Brazilian striker Ronaldo, who scored both goals and seems fully recovered from years of injury problems. With 8 goals Ronaldo also is the top scorer of the World Cup.
Third place play off
Mind over matter in Pool?
Some time ago we reported that the Two Hot Chicks, competitors in the Kapteyn World Cup Pool, had randomly predicted their scores. The interesting thing was that the number of points they scored was pretty average, implying that scoring points in the Pool is pure luck. But now that we are almost at the end of the World Cup and the Pool, things are looking differently. The Two Hot Chicks are near the bottom of the list (but not last) now. And so it looks like carefully predicting scores gives better results than randomly drawing numbers from a pile after all. The human mind beats the pile of pieces of paper? Not according to one of the Hot Chicks, who commented: "We were just not destined to win!"
Last predictions to be handed in
This coming weekend the last two matches of the World Cup will be played. On saturday, co-host South-Korea faces Turkey in the playoff for the third place. The final between Germany and Brazil will be played on sunday. This of course means that the predictions for these matches have to be handed in before the weekend. Please give your predictions to any of the HOC members before 18:00 hours (CEST) on friday, June 28.

Three potential winners left in Pool
No big surprises today in the Kapteyn World Cup Pool, as Brazil beats Turkey and advances to the final. In the top of the list nothing much changes, but as there are only 2 matches and therefore 6 points to go, only the current top 3 can still win the Pool. Cesar is still first with 57 points, followed by Willem and Eline, who have 54 and 53 points respectively. Jarno and Jelte are following with 49 points, but can't reach Cesar anymore. A second place, however, is still possible for them.
Semi final June 26
Eline moves in closer to Cesar and Willem
The battle for victory in the Kapteyn World Cup Pool is not over yet! In third place, Eline scored 3 points today, moving in closer to Cesar and Willem who both only scored 1 point. Cesar is still leading Willem with 3 points, but Eline is only 1 point behind Willem. Although there is a gap of 4 points behind Eline to Jarno and Jelte, they shouldn't be overlooked either. And so the excitement continues, just like in the World Cup.
Semi final June 25
- Germany - South-Korea 1-0
Deadline for semifinal predictions is noon tuesday, June 25th
The first semifinal of the World Cup, Germany vs. South-Korea, will be played on tuesday June 25th at 13:30 CEST. Predictions for the semifinals should be handed to any HOC member before noon (12:00 CEST) on that same day. Good luck!
Cesar in the lead as semifinals approach
As the semifinals of the World Cup are approaching, Cesar is still in the lead in the Kapteyn World Cup Pool. With 53 points he is 3 points ahead of Willem and 6 points ahead of Eline. With only 4 matches to go in the World Cup, the maximum number of points that can be scored are 14 (4x3=12 for predicting the right scores and 2 bonus points for predicting both winners of the semifinals). This means that more than half of the competitors in the Pool cannot win the Pool anymore. After the semifinals all can be decided, but let's hope the winner will only be decided on sunday, when the World Cup Final will be played!
Quarterfinals June 22
- Spain - South-Korea 0-0, South-Korea wins after penalties
- Senegal - Turkey 0-1
Quarterfinals June 21
- England - Brazil 1-2
- Germany - USA 1-0
