DirectColor support for GIDS ============================ Until recently, GIPSY's oldest image display program GIDS could only run on 8 bit PseudoColor displays. Modern graphics interfaces and drivers that support this mode are hard to find. To be able to run GIDS on modern 24 bit displays we changed the program so that it now also supports 24 bit DirectColor colour mode. The disadvantage of DirectColor is the effect of colour flashing. But we think the advantages are more important: -You don't need a separate 8 bit X server anymore to run GIDS. -The new version is as fast as the old PseudoColor version. -There are a number of GIPSY tasks that interact with GIDS. Some of them have not yet been rewritten to cooperate with other display software. With this version of GIDS the old functionality becomes available again.
