The past decade has witnessed enormous advances in our understanding of the formation and evolution of structure in the Universe. However, in the last few years several observations have focused the attention of the cosmological community on one of the least understood processes in the Universe's evolution; the epoch of reionization of the IGM. As a result, a large amount of effort is currently dedicated to understanding the physical processes that trigger and govern the evolution of this epoch and their ramifications on subsequent structure formation. So far we only have a handful of observations that give rough constraints on the reionization process. In the near future, however, several experiments -- most notably the LOFAR/EoR project, PAST and MWA -- are designed to measure the hydrogen neutral fraction of the IGM as a function of redshift and angular position through the hyper-fine 21 cm spectral line, and thereby shed light on many aspects of the physics of the reionization process, e.g.:
In short these projects will provide a treasure trove for studying the inter-relations between cosmology, structure formation and the intergalactic medium.
With the projected schedules of LOFAR, PAST and, possibly, MWA aiming
at 2007 for the start of data collection, the purpose of this meeting
is to bring together observers, theoreticians and simulators of the
IGM and epoch of reionization. Our hope is to focus the attention of both
communities on the observational properties of the expected
measurements and the various physical processes that might produce
them, within the larger context of current cosmological models and the
physics of the IGM.
