Research I am interested in the formation, structure, dynamics and evolution of galaxies, in particular late-type disk systems, with a focus on studying the amount and distribution of luminous and dark matter in these galaxies by investigating the dynamics of the stars and the gas, exploiting the techniques of Integral Field Unit spectroscopy and spectral radio aperture synthesis imaging. I am involved in the development of a wide-field focal plane array for the Westerbork radio telescope as a technology pathfinder for the Square Kilometre Array.
Teaching This year, I am teaching "The Evolving Universe", an introductory course in astronomy for students of all disciplines at the University of Groningen. To provide our astronomy students with more experience regarding instrument development and observational techniques, I am leading the construction of a new observatory on the university campus.
